In the Broadway musical Something Rotten! Borle pits Shakespeare, portrayed as an egomaniacal artist and brazen plagiarist, against up-and-coming playwrights Nick and Nigel Bottom, who set out to make a name for themselves by authoring the world’s first musical.
Mr. Borle played the role of Shakespeare from the play’s opening on April 22, 2015, until July 16, 2016, when he left the production along with several other original cast members. The role earned him a 2015 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. Mr. Borle’s performance also drew rave reviews from critics in Variety and the New York Times.
